Kendrell Tyree Hall, 22 of Harrisburg, has been identified as the man fatally shot on Sunday, according to a release by county press secretary Diane McNaughton.
Police officers were in the downtown area investigating a "shots fired" report, according to the Dauphin County District Attorney's office.
Before the shooting, a Harrisburg City Police officer and a K9 began chasing a man who broke free from a group who was wearing a mask and carrying a gun, according to the DA's office.
The officers then began chasing the man later identified as Kendrell from downtown around 1:30 a.m. on June 9, according to a release by the City's Communications Director Matthew Maisel and the DA's office.
The chase led them to the 200 block of South Street, "the man fired multiple shots at the officers. Officers returned fire and struck and killed the person who fired upon them," Maisel stated in the release.
The office involved was unharmed but "the K9 was spooked by the gunfire and ran away but was located shortly after," Maisel said, explaining that "the K9 took a graze wound from one of the shots fired but is doing fine this morning."
This officer-involved shooting is under investigation by the District Attorney's office and the county's Criminal Investigative Division.
Kendrell was a convicted felon who served 151 days in jail beginning in 2021 for felonies for Receiving Stolen Property; Possession of a Firearm With Manufacturer Number Altered, Etc.; Manufacture, Delivery, or Possession With Intent to Manufacture or Deliver Drugs; as well as two misdemeanors for Possession Of Firearm Prohibited and Use or Possession Of Drug Paraphernalia, court records show. He previously served 212 days in prison for a felony conviction for Firearms Not To Be Carried without a License and a misdemeanor for Carrying a Firearm During an Emergency, as detailed in an earlier docket in 2021.
